Problem
Around 83 internal applications used by production, quality and logistics teams lived in a scattered Node.js server setup. The main server.js was about 4,800 lines; every new app made it bigger and harder to maintain and roll out.
System
A modular monolith on Node.js, Express.js and PostgreSQL: each application in its own module, all of them in one runtime.
My part
I ran the migration end to end. In the same environment I worked on Microsoft Entra ID / SSO integrations and application security improvements, and handled deployment, debugging and production support on Linux/Windows Server, Nginx, systemd and PostgreSQL.
Decision
Split applications into modules inside one runtime instead of separate services: boundaries became clear without adding operational load, and the main server file became just an entry point.
Result
The main server.js went from roughly 4,800 lines to 680. Maintaining and rolling out applications became far easier.
“Adding an app no longer means growing the file. It means adding a module.”
